Oddstream, Goodbye Internet: Vanished Web

Waar:

What would happen if the internet would cease to exist? What could be an alternative way of a sustainable internet structure? These questions are addressed during the mini-festival Goodbye Internet, in which Oddstream explores together with scientists and artists the dead ends and future boundaries of the internet. What can we learn about the internet when we think about it ending?

What would happen if the internet would cease to exist? What could be an alternative way of a sustainable internet structure? These questions are addressed during the mini-festival Goodbye Internet, in which Oddstream explores together with scientists and artists the dead ends and future boundaries of the internet. What can we learn about the internet when we think about it ending?

Artists Mariana Marangoni (VK/BR), Nella Piatek (VK/PL) and Wesley Goatley (VK) will discuss their recent work covering current and speculative endings of the internet. What happens after the end of the internet? Will it come back to haunt us?

During Vanished Web, artists and designers Mariana Marangoni (UK/BR), Nella Piatek (UK/PL) and Wesley Goatley (UK) discuss recent work related to current and speculative endings of the internet. This gathering focuses on aestheticizing the frayed edges of the internet, resisting planned obsolescence of Big Tech and using witchcraft to honour our devices, but most of all it wants to show us that even when the internet ends, it will come back to haunt us.

MARIANA MARANGONI’s work explores the materiality of media and new forms of narrative. Her installation Merciless Entropy (2021), which she will talk about this evening tonight, is a monument to the fragile-yet-pervasive foundations of the internet, and presents a new form of ruin aesthetics that are emerging from the modern Web. The artwork focuses on how online wastelands of digital errors and forgotten pages scattered around the web can also be seen as something beautiful.

NELLA PIATEK studies systems of human interaction, anthropological futures and socio-technical imaginaries. Tonight she will give a presentation about Into the Ethereal (2021) is an interactive fiction placed in a Post-Internet future, where servers of smaller social platforms such as Tumblr are shut down as a result of an monopoly of larger platforms. Through a haunted operating system this interactive piece explores radical futures and the new experiences that could emerge if human attitudes and views towards digital technologies become more spiritual, sensuous and emotional.

WESLEY GOATLEY’s critical practice examines the aesthetics and politics of data, machine learning, and voice recognition technologies and the power they have in shaping the world and our understanding of it. This last evening of our minifestival, Wesley provides an introduction on the topics with tantalizing examples on the end of the internet.
