What would happen if the internet would cease to exist? What could be an alternative way of a sustainable internet structure? These questions are addressed during the mini-festival Goodbye Internet, in which Oddstream explores together with scientists and artists the dead ends and future boundaries of the internet. What can we learn about the internet when we think about it ending?

Artists Richard Vijgen (NL), Mariana Marangoni (VK/BR) and Michiel Huijben (NL) speak about their work and talk about the architectonic ruin and ruin aesthetics that visualise the end of the internet. Which form will internet’s remnants have? What does digital decay look like and to which extent should we try to prevent it? What do we need to save and what role does the archive have in this?
Since the early days of the internet, architectonic and urban metaphors, such as the ‘digital highway’ and the Digital City, are used to understand the internet better. This evening we’ll be focusing on the architectonic ruin and ruin aesthetics to visualise the end of the internet. Which form will internet’s remnants have? What does digital decay look like and to which extent should we try to prevent it? What do we need to save and what role does the archive have in this?
RICHARD VIJGEN is an artist, designer and teacher focusing on the visualisation of data, networks, and algorithms. In his work Deleted Cities 3.0 (2017) he turns to digital archeology to bring new life to the internet phenomenon Geocities, which was shut down in 2009.
MARIANA MARANGONI combines the digital with the sculptural to research the materiality of media. She is interested in the way digital decay on the internet is made either visible or deliberately hidden, and wonders what should be saved and what not. Marangoni’s work Merciless Entropy (2021) explores the fragile basis of the internet while using dystopian ruin aesthetics.
MICHIEL HUIJBEN’s work centers around architecture. His writing, performances and installations depart from, draw on, or intervene in built environments to voice unspoken narratives and conjure speculative legacies. His recent work States of Place (2021) reflects on on changes in the design and use of post-war public space in the Netherlands and how archives remember these.
